Where to Stay in Rome the First Time: Start With the Sights

The Colosseum and the Forum, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, and the Vatican sit in three separate parts of central Rome, and a first base works best beside whichever one fills most days. Monti borders the first: Turismo Roma draws its boundary along Piazza del Colosseo, and Colosseo station serves Metro Lines B and C.

The other bases trade that position for something else. The historic center puts the Pantheon and Piazza Navona on foot, Trastevere keeps an older Rome across the river, Prati sits beside the Vatican, and the streets around Termini hold the budget beds and the airport train.

Monti: The Imperial Fora on the Doorstep

Monti is the base for a first trip planned around ancient Rome. Turismo Roma, the city's official tourism site, lists the Imperial Fora, Trajan's Markets and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore within the rione. Its boundary follows Piazza del Colosseo and Via dei Fori Imperiali.

The official rione is large: Turismo Roma runs its borders from Piazza del Colosseo and Via dei Fori Imperiali to Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore, Via Merulana and the Lateran. A room near Santa Maria Maggiore has a longer walk to the Forum than one near Colosseo station, so check the distance from the exact address.

The metro is the other draw. Colosseo station has served Metro Line C since December 2025, when the line was extended from San Giovanni to create an interchange with Line B. Roma Servizi per la Mobilità now lists Line C as running from Pantano to Colosseo.

Evenings stay local too. Turismo Roma notes that Monti hosts "many art galleries and wineries" and calls it "one of the districts of the Capitoline nightlife".

The Historic Center: The Pantheon and Piazza Navona on Foot

The historic center suits travelers who would rather walk than ride. The Pantheon stands on Piazza della Rotonda, according to Turismo Roma. A base here puts the Pantheon and Piazza Navona outside the door rather than at the end of a metro trip.

Albergo del Senato faces the Pantheon's square at Piazza della Rotonda 73, in a 19th-century building designed by Gaetano Koch, and its site puts Piazza Navona 350 m away. Hotel Raphaël, a 5-star luxury hotel, sits at Largo Febo 2, a few meters from Piazza Navona.

Trastevere vs Monti: Old-Rome Lanes or the Forum

Choose Trastevere for older streets across the river, and Monti for the Forum and a metro stop on the doorstep. Turismo Roma calls Trastevere the largest rione, loved by residents and visitors who want "the atmosphere of the Rome of yesteryear". The name comes from the Latin trans Tiberim, "beyond the Tiber".

The sights differ as much as the streets. Trastevere holds the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere and Villa Farnesina, with frescoes by Raphael and his school. From the Janiculum hill above it, near the Garibaldi statue, the view takes in the historic center and the dome of St. Peter's.

The hill keeps a daily ritual too. According to Turismo Roma, soldiers fire a blank cannon shot under the Janiculum belvedere every day at noon, as they have there since 1904.

Prati: Line A and the Vatican Within Walking Distance

Prati suits families and Vatican-focused trips. Turismo Roma places it on the right bank of the Tiber, a few steps from the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica. Its Umbertine and Art Nouveau buildings date from the building boom after Rome became the capital of Italy.

Turismo Roma describes a district of elegant boutiques, refined restaurants and trendy clubs, where young Romans meet for an aperitif, a gourmet dinner or shopping on Via Cola di Rienzo, one of the city's most important shopping streets. Metro Line A stops at Ottaviano, on Viale Giulio Cesare at the corner of Via Ottaviano, and at Lepanto, which reopened on August 31, 2026, according to a Roma Servizi per la Mobilità notice that day.

• Good for: families, longer stays and days that start at the Vatican
• Keep in mind: Turismo Roma mentions trendy clubs in the district, so check the street and which way a room faces if sleep matters
• Nearest metro: Ottaviano and Lepanto (Line A)

Around Termini: Budget Beds and the Airport Train

Termini suits tight budgets and early flights. Trenitalia describes Roma Termini as the main interchange for all of the city's public transport. Its Leonardo Express runs non-stop to Fiumicino Airport in 32 minutes, with departures scheduled every 15 minutes.

Leonardo Express details, from Trenitalia, checked November 4, 2026:

• Fare: €14 per ticket, or €40 for four on the Mini-groups fare
• Children: free under 4, and one child aged 4 to 11 travels free with each paying adult
• Tickets not valid: integrated Metrebus city tickets
• Luggage: no surcharge, including large bags
• Airport station: inside the airport

Hostels cluster here. The Beehive on Via Marghera calls itself a Rome Termini hostel and takes no groups of more than three. YellowSquare Rome, on Via Palestro, offers dorms and bills itself as near Termini station.

What a Night Costs: Room Rates and Rome's Tourist Tax

Room rates move with the date and the street. Neither Roma Capitale nor Turismo Roma publishes nightly hotel rates by neighborhood, so no range appears here. The At-a-glance box above links live prices for the exact dates.

Every guest who is not a Rome resident also pays the contributo di soggiorno, the city's tourist tax, per person per night, unless an exemption applies. The hotel or other accommodation collects it; for a short-term rental, the regulation also makes responsible an agent or booking platform that takes the payment. The rates below come from the table approved in Giunta resolution 255 of 2023, in force since October 1, 2023, which Roma Capitale's tourist-tax page still lists as current, checked November 4, 2026:

• 1-star hotel: €4
• 2-star hotel: €5
• 3-star hotel: €6
• 4-star hotel: €7.50
• 5-star hotel or higher: €10
• Bed and breakfast: €6
• Guest house or affittacamere: €5, €6 or €7, by category
• Holiday home or apartment: €5 or €6, by category
• Short-term rental: €6
• Hostel (ostello): €3.50, unless it is a youth hostel, which is exempt

For these types of stay, the table charges the tax for up to 10 consecutive nights in a calendar year at the same property. A separate rule in article 6 of the regulation applies to documented stays for study courses or work: the tax stops after 10 nights in total in a calendar year, consecutive or not. A couple spending four nights in a 4-star hotel pays 2 × 4 × €7.50, or €60, on top of the room rate.

Exemptions sit in article 5 of the tourist tax regulation, as amended by Assemblea Capitolina resolution 34 of 2024, which republished the 2022 regulation (resolution 87) in full. Youth hostels (ostelli della gioventù) are exempt; other hostels charge €3.50, so ask the hostel which applies. Children are exempt until their 10th birthday. Patients receiving care, with one companion each, and people with a certified serious disability, with their family caregiver, are exempt with a signed declaration. Article 5 lists the rest.

Before Booking: The Exact Address and the Last Train

Area names in listings stretch. "Near the Vatican" can describe a street in Prati by Ottaviano or one well beyond it, and a Trastevere address can sit by Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere or at the district's edge. The street address settles it.

Then check the last train. Roma Servizi per la Mobilità's timetable, updated April 29, 2026, gives these departure times from the end-of-line stations of Lines A, B and C:

• First departures: about 5:30 am
• Last departures, Sunday to Thursday: about 11:30 pm
• Last departures, Friday and Saturday: about 1:30 am
• Line B exceptions: the last trains leave Rebibbia at 11:27 pm, or 1:27 am on Fridays and Saturdays

These are the times trains leave the end of the line, not the last chance to board at a station such as Ottaviano or Termini. The last train through a given station depends on the station, the direction and the day, so check the timetable for the trip home before planning a late dinner. How long is the train from Termini to Fiumicino Airport?

32 minutes on the Leonardo Express, which runs non-stop with departures scheduled every 15 minutes, for €14, according to Trenitalia. For an early flight, check the first departure for the travel date on Trenitalia before booking near the station.

Do children pay Rome's tourist tax?

Not until their 10th birthday. Roma Capitale's regulation exempts children up to that age, and older guests pay unless another exemption applies, for up to 10 consecutive nights at the same property.
